This directory currently has more than 900 sites listed in over 150 categories and subcategories. It is updated almost daily.
Humpherlinks
originally came into being in 1997, being established with a simple
idea that grew from a growing concern about the apparent lack of a
'one-stop shop' of the resources available to children, parents,
teachers and carers on the internet in a rapidly changing world wide
web. A world in which children themselves were often more adept at
using than those who were in the role of helping them in various ways
to develop to the best of their potential.
Putting this idea into action with limited resources and knowledge at
that time was not without problems, learning HTML being one of them. It
was very much a case of learning by trial and error, using 'idiot'
guides. I also had an interest in 'freeware', initially driven by
limited resources, but on researching this I began to realise just how
good some software functioned, particularly some of the 'freeware'.
This idea rapidly grew to include almost anything that was freely
available for the benefit of children without payment. Today. although
still having a primary interest in 'freeware', I also take great note
of any software which is good value, free or otherwise.
Moving to its own domain was a natural progression over concern that I
had no control at all about the advertisements that came with free
hosting services. From then it grew into a very difficult to update and
time consuming set of pages. What had I let myself in for?
More problems developed until one day I found additional hidden links
included on all pages that I had not installed. I subsequently
ascertained that my once UK hosting had been transferred to servers in
Russia without my knowledge and that they were not secure. I
immediately moved to a new host,
Heart Internet.
I had to close down over 90% of the site, and coupled with personal
time constraints, I found it hard to get enthusiastic again.
However, it is now back with what I hope is a much better service based
on a database system, which will allow for more resources to be
included in more defined categories. My greatest wish is that it
provides a useful and effective service for those who will use it.
The site is still operated on a non-profit basis, any payments from
affiliates being used to improve the service it hopefully provides. No
payment is sought to use this directory or to have resources included,
these being included on merit and potential interest to users of the
directory. In the event that anyone would like to make a donation to
support the continuation and improvement of this directory, they may do
so via the button below with grateful thanks,
